- Walnut | Matson
Walnut Walnut is one of the most recognized and requested hardwoods in the world, prized for its rich, dark color and its long-standing reputation as a premier furniture and cabinetry species. The heartwood of walnut ranges from light brown to a deep chocolate brown, occasionally showing a purplish cast, while the sapwood is nearly white to pale tan. The contrast between heart and sap is pronounced but can be reduced through steaming, a common practice to improve overall color uniformity. Walnut generally has a straight grain, though occasional waves or curl can occur, with a medium, uniform texture. Small mineral streaks and occasional burl figure are natural characteristics that add character without compromising strength. Scientific Name Juglans nigra Also Known As Black Walnut Janka Hardness Avg. Dried Weight 3.2 lbs/bdft Common Uses Cabinets Doors Flooring Furniture Panelling The Matson Difference Walnut is one of the most valuable species Matson processes, and every step reflects that. We source within a small regional radius and inspect each load before and after kiln drying, following species-specific schedules calibrated to Walnut's density and moisture behavior to protect its rich color and minimize checking or warp. That same attention carries through grading, where we work to preserve the color depth and grain character Walnut is prized for. The result is high-yield Walnut lumber with the consistency and quality that commands a premium in the marketplace. - Less Than Trailer Load (LTL) Hardwood Lumber | Matson Lumber Company
Matson Lumber Company offers less than trailer load (LTL) hardwood purchasing for cabinet shops, millwork operations, and woodworking businesses in western Pennsylvania. Premium kiln-dried hardwood in smaller quantities. Less than Trailer Load (LTL) Premium Matson Hardwood Lumber in the Quantities You Need Not every shop needs a full trailer load of lumber. Matson Lumber offers LTL purchasing for local and regional customers — the same premium, kiln-dried hardwood in the quantities that match your production schedule. Contact Our Sales Team View Stock List Home / Products / Less than Trailer Load / Built for Small-Shop Operations Matson's core lineup includes five primary species, selected for their market demand and Matson's ability to produce them at the highest quality level. We also produce select quantities of secondary species — contact our sales team for current availability. Small to mid-size cabinet shops producing custom kitchens, built-ins, and furniture who need consistent KD hardwood in manageable quantities. Cabinet Shops Millwork operations producing interior trim, moulding, doors, and architectural components who require consistent species and grade quality. Architectural Millwork Custom furniture makers and smaller production shops who value premium hardwood and can't afford grade inconsistencies that drive up waste. Furniture Makers Regional hardwood retailers and dealers supplementing their inventory with premium Appalachian species from a trusted, nearby source. Hardwood Dealers Genuine Kiln Dried Lumber Matson's KD lumber means what it says: consistent moisture content, every load. No Restrictive Minimums Buy what your production schedule actually requires, without excessive minimums or freight markups that penalize smaller shops. Consistency You Can Count On The same grading standards Matson's larger customers depend on. Less culling, less waste, and more usable yield from every board. We Understand What Small Shops Need Buyers have told us the same thing for years: too many suppliers treat LTL orders as an afterthought by padding freight costs, enforcing high minimums, or shipping product that doesn't hold up to what was promised. We built our LTL program around what small shops actually need to keep their production moving. Species Availability Matson's full range of primary and secondary hardwood species may be available for LTL purchase, subject to current inventory. Availability varies by species and season. - White Oak | Matson
White Oak White Oak is a premium domestic hardwood prized for its durability, tight grain structure, and natural resistance to moisture, making it a longstanding choice for flooring, furniture, and fine millwork. The heartwood of white oak ranges from light to medium brown, occasionally with an olive or grayish cast, while the sapwood is nearly white to pale tan, with only moderate contrast between the two. White oak has a straight, coarse grain similar to red oak but with tighter pores, giving it superior strength and moisture resistance. Prominent ray fleck patterns appear on quartersawn surfaces, and small mineral streaks or sound knots occur naturally as characteristics of the species. Scientific Name Quercus alba Also Known As White Oak Janka Hardness Avg. Dried Weight 4 lbs/bdft Common Uses Barrel Staves Cabinets Doors Flooring Furniture Glulam Beams Mouldings The Matson Difference White Oak demands precision, and that's where generations of Matson kiln drying experience make the difference. We source within a small regional radius, inspect every load, then run through our Oak dip process to maintain brightness and guard against staining. Following kiln drying, the lumber is once again inspected Because White Oak's dense, tight-pore structure is more prone to checking and slower to dry evenly than other oaks, we follow controlled, species-specific schedules that protect both structural integrity and appearance. The result is a bright, consistent White Oak product with the yield and reliability our customers have come to expect. - Hard Maple | Matson
Hard Maple Hard Maple, also known as Sugar Maple or Rock Maple, is one of the strongest and most durable domestic hardwoods, widely specified for flooring, cabinetry, and other high-wear surfaces. The sapwood of hard maple is creamy white, occasionally with a reddish-brown tinge, while the heartwood is light reddish brown. Mineral streaking — a natural gray to greenish discoloration — occurs in varying degrees and is considered a normal characteristic of the species. Hard maple typically has a straight grain with a fine, uniform texture, though figured patterns such as birdseye, curly, or quilted grain occur occasionally and are highly valued when present. Scientific Name Acer saccharum Also Known As Hard Maple, Sugar Maple, Rock Maple, Black Maple Janka Hardness Avg. Dried Weight 3.7 lbs/bdft Common Uses Cabinets Flooring Furniture Mouldings The Matson Difference Hard Maple's clean, bright appearance is exactly what The Matson White Wood processing protocol is built to protect. Because Hard Maple is prone to staining if it sits too long between the log and the kiln, we follow strict, time-sensitive schedules from intake through drying. Every load is inspected before and after kiln drying, which is how we preserve the brightness, appearance, and prevent discoloration — critical for a species so often selected for its clarity and figure. The result is dependable, high-yield Hard Maple lumber with the color consistency Matson customers demand. Available from Matson Thicknesses 4/4 - 8/4 Lengths 6' - 16' Widths Contact for details Grades Prime, 1C, 2C, Rustic Surface Finishes S2S Ready to Order? - Soft Maple | Matson
Soft Maple Soft Maple, encompassing both Red Maple and Silver Maple, offers many of the visual qualities of Hard Maple with easier workability, making it a popular choice for furniture, millwork, and cabinetry. The sapwood of soft maple is white to creamy white, while the heartwood is light reddish brown to grayish brown, with mineral streaking a common and natural occurrence. Soft maple has a generally straight grain with a fine to medium, uniform texture. It is somewhat softer and more porous than Hard Maple, which allows it to machine, stain, and finish with excellent results. Scientific Name Acer rubrum Also Known As Soft Maple, Red Maple Janka Hardness Avg. Dried Weight 3.2 lbs/bdft Common Uses Cabinets Doors Furniture Mouldings Turning The Matson Difference Soft Maple is one of the more delicate species to process, and it's here that Matson's disciplined approach shows most clearly. As a White Wood species, Soft Maple is highly susceptible to staining if it isn't moved quickly from log to kiln, so we follow strict, time-sensitive processing schedules from the moment it arrives at our mill. Every load is inspected before and after kiln drying. Following these strict processes is how Matson preserves the bright color and clean appearance. The result is clean, bright Soft Maple lumber with the consistency and yield Matson customers depend on.
