Walnut
Walnut is one of the most recognized and requested hardwoods in the world, prized for its rich, dark color and its long-standing reputation as a premier furniture and cabinetry species.
The heartwood of walnut ranges from light brown to a deep chocolate brown, occasionally showing a purplish cast, while the sapwood is nearly white to pale tan. The contrast between heart and sap is pronounced but can be reduced through steaming, a common practice to improve overall color uniformity. Walnut generally has a straight grain, though occasional waves or curl can occur, with a medium, uniform texture. Small mineral streaks and occasional burl figure are natural characteristics that add character without compromising strength.

The Matson Difference
Walnut is one of the most valuable species Matson processes, and every step reflects that. We source within a small regional radius and inspect each load before and after kiln drying, following species-specific schedules calibrated to Walnut's density and moisture behavior to protect its rich color and minimize checking or warp. That same attention carries through grading, where we work to preserve the color depth and grain character Walnut is prized for. The result is high-yield Walnut lumber with the consistency and quality that commands a premium in the marketplace.
