Hard Maple
Hard Maple, also known as Sugar Maple or Rock Maple, is one of the strongest and most durable domestic hardwoods, widely specified for flooring, cabinetry, and other high-wear surfaces.
The sapwood of hard maple is creamy white, occasionally with a reddish-brown tinge, while the heartwood is light reddish brown. Mineral streaking — a natural gray to greenish discoloration — occurs in varying degrees and is considered a normal characteristic of the species. Hard maple typically has a straight grain with a fine, uniform texture, though figured patterns such as birdseye, curly, or quilted grain occur occasionally and are highly valued when present.

The Matson Difference
Hard Maple's clean, bright appearance is exactly what The Matson White Wood processing protocol is built to protect. Because Hard Maple is prone to staining if it sits too long between the log and the kiln, we follow strict, time-sensitive schedules from intake through drying. Every load is inspected before and after kiln drying, which is how we preserve the brightness, appearance, and prevent discoloration — critical for a species so often selected for its clarity and figure. The result is dependable, high-yield Hard Maple lumber with the color consistency Matson customers demand.
