Soft Maple
Soft Maple, encompassing both Red Maple and Silver Maple, offers many of the visual qualities of Hard Maple with easier workability, making it a popular choice for furniture, millwork, and cabinetry.
The sapwood of soft maple is white to creamy white, while the heartwood is light reddish brown to grayish brown, with mineral streaking a common and natural occurrence. Soft maple has a generally straight grain with a fine to medium, uniform texture. It is somewhat softer and more porous than Hard Maple, which allows it to machine, stain, and finish with excellent results.

The Matson Difference
Soft Maple is one of the more delicate species to process, and it's here that Matson's disciplined approach shows most clearly. As a White Wood species, Soft Maple is highly susceptible to staining if it isn't moved quickly from log to kiln, so we follow strict, time-sensitive processing schedules from the moment it arrives at our mill. Every load is inspected before and after kiln drying. Following these strict processes is how Matson preserves the bright color and clean appearance. The result is clean, bright Soft Maple lumber with the consistency and yield Matson customers depend on.
