Basswood
Basswood, also known as American Linden, is a lightweight, soft hardwood valued for its stability and ease of machining in carving, millwork, and secondary manufacturing applications.
The sapwood of basswood is creamy white to pale brown, and the heartwood is pale brown, occasionally with reddish or gray streaks, resulting in minimal contrast between heart and sap. Basswood has a straight grain with a fine, even texture and low density. It machines cleanly, holds detail well, and accepts stain and paint uniformly, with minimal natural figure to interrupt a consistent finish.

The Matson Difference
Basswood's pale, uniform color is one of its defining qualities, and protecting that color is central to Matson's White Wood processing approach. Because Basswood is highly susceptible to staining, we move it quickly from log to kiln under strict, time-sensitive schedules, followed by careful inspection before and after drying. By following these Species-specific processes we can preserve the clean, consistent tone Basswood is known for, supporting its use in carving, millwork, and finish-grade applications. The result is Basswood lumber with the light color and dependable yield our customers count on.
